Cray XD1 and SGI Altix 350 Replace Cray SV1
2004
- Cray SV1 was decomissioned and replaced with a Cray XD1 and a SGI Altix 350. Both systems were funded by NASA educational outreach grants.
- The Cray XD1 installation was a tie between the Supercomputer Authority and Oakridge National lab getting the first XD1 systems in the country on the same day.
- In testing and using the new XD1 systems, the work done at the Alabama Super Computer Center has influenced the way that the systems are manufactured and features present in the operating system.
Schools Connected to AREN
2008
132 local K12 schools and all colleges in the Alabama Community College system are connected to the Alabama Research and Education Network (AREN).
Dense Memory Cluster (DMC) Replaces Cray XD1
2009
The Cray XD1 was decomissioned after support for this model was discontinued. A locally architected Dense Memory Cluster (DMC), a fat node cluster was built and continued growing.
AREN Expanded
2009
AREN was expanded to include additional links from Mobile to Birmingham and Birmingham to Huntsville.

2010
