Alabama Supercomputer Center Named and Dedicated

1988

The Alabama Legislature names the Alabama Supercomputer Center after Governor George Wallace and Governor Guy Hunt dedicated the Center in July.

ASA Becomes Public Corporation

1989

Alabama Supercomputer Authority is authorized by the Alabama Legislature as a public corporation and is created to provide High Performance Computing (HPC) resources to academic institutions in Alabama.

High School Teachers Attend Summer Course

1989

Several Alabama High School Teachers attend the first supercomputer summer course in Huntsville. It was organized by Dr. John Ziebarth of UAH and Dr. Elizabeth French of ACHE.

High School Students Present Projects at Expo

1990

Students of the teachers who attended the first supercomputer summer course present their year long supercomputer projects at the first Annual Alabama High Schools Supercomputing Expo.

Second Supercomputer nCUBE2 Installed

1991

The Alabama Supercomputer Authority and Boeing install Alabama's second Supercomputer, the nCUBE2 which used a massively parallel processing architecture.

Connected to the Internet

1991

Connected to the Internet (Information Superhighway). The Alabama Supercomputer Network was first connected to SURANet (Southern Universities Research Association) which was a precursor to the internet connection.
